Introduction to Kayaking

Kayaking is divided into two basic styles: river kayaking and sea/touring kayaking.

River Kayaking: Conducted on moving water within a river corridor. The kayak is a single passenger vessel where the paddler sits and is sealed within using a spray deck. Above the basic level, this is referred to as whitewater kayaking.

Sea/Touring Kayaking: This involves using a similar kayak, but it is typically longer and narrower. The paddler is sealed into the cockpit with a spray deck. Touring kayaking is conducted on open water, such as seas, lakes, or coastal areas.

Sustainability Tips

Sustainability in kayaking involves minimizing environmental impact while preserving natural water bodies and surrounding ecosystems.

River Kayaking Sustainability Factors:

  • Human Waste Management: Proper disposal of waste to prevent river pollution.
  • Overuse of Beaches/Campsites: Avoiding overcrowding and overuse of natural areas.
  • Chemicals: Minimizing the use of soaps, bleach, and other chemicals in the river.
  • Fire Management: Using fire pans when necessary and ensuring no traces of campfires are left.
  • Dishwater Management: Straining and packing out dishwater.
  • Food Scraps: Packing out all food scraps.
  • Interaction with Other Users: Respecting the space and experience of other river users.

Touring Kayaking Sustainability Factors:

  • Waste Disposal: Proper disposal of waste in waterways.
  • Launch/Landing Sites: Avoiding overuse and degradation of these areas.
  • Interaction with Other Boaters: Maintaining courteous and respectful interactions.
  • LNT Camping: Adhering to Leave No Trace principles during multi-day journeys.

Preparations

Safety in kayaking is paramount due to the varied risks associated with navigating rivers and open water environments. Guides are essential for ensuring safety in kayaking through their technical proficiency in whitewater techniques or sea kayaking skills, river rescue capabilities, and comprehensive pre- and post-trip planning. They conduct dynamic risk assessments to adapt to changing water conditions and are trained in first aid to respond to emergencies swiftly. Guests are expected to possess swimming proficiency and appropriate kayaking skills relative to their chosen activity level, ensuring they can navigate safely in challenging water environments.
