The journey of over 500 kilometers from Dunhuang to the west, passing through Hami and then to Turpan, constitutes the most legendary section of the ancient Silk Road - the Grand Sea Route (Da Hai Dao, 大海道). Along the way, there are ancient castles, beacon towers, post stations, prehistoric human settlements, fossil mountains, mirages, desert wild camel herds, and numerous rare geographical landforms.
